Fathuhulla Ismail
Senior Counsel
Fathuhulla specialises in complex litigation, arbitration and regulatory matters. He advises businesses and individuals on commercial disputes, regulatory investigations and administrative matters involving state authorities, combining contentious experience with practical commercial advice.
Prior to entering private practice, Fathuhulla served as counsel for the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, appearing on its behalf before the Tax Appeal Tribunal and the appellate courts, including the Supreme Court of the Maldives. This grounding in revenue law informs the rigour of his legal analysis, and clients value the clarity and conceptual depth he brings to complex problems.
Fathuhulla leads the firm’s dispute resolution and risk advisory practice. He regularly represents clients before the superior courts of the Maldives, including the High Court and the Supreme Court. His practice covers a broad range of contentious matters, including commercial and contractual disputes, construction and real estate claims, complex labour disputes, and high-value tax controversies. He also assists clients in both domestic and international arbitration.
His experience in complex disputes also shapes his advisory practice. He helps clients structure, draft and negotiate commercial arrangements with a practical understanding of the issues that are most likely to give rise to disputes, allowing risks to be identified and addressed at an early stage.
Fathuhulla is recognised by Chambers Global in its General Business Law rankings for the Maldives, where he has been ranked for four consecutive years. He is licensed to practise before the Supreme Court of the Maldives and has extensive advocacy experience before the appellate courts of the Maldives. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), a Fellow of The Tax Institute (Australia), and a Member of the International Fiscal Association (IFA). He is also a Licensed Notary Public in the Maldives.
Fathuhulla holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from The Maldives National University and a Master of Laws with Excellence in Corporate, Commercial and Taxation Law, from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia.
