Dangerous Chemicals Regulation Published

On 23 September 2019, the “Dangerous Chemicals Regulation” was published in the Government Gazette. The Regulation sets out procedures on the import, storage, sale and disposal of dangerous chemicals.

The Regulation was published under special initiatives directed by President Ibrahim Solih, in response to a raging chemical fire that broke out in a crowded residential district near ADK Hospital. The chemical fire, which originated in a storage space that contained dangerous chemicals, swiftly spread to nearby buildings, soon enveloping the general vicinity in flames.

The Regulation is designed to impose stringent requirements on enterprises and parties that import, store and trade in dangerous chemicals. From the date of publication of the Regulation, enterprises have three months to comply with the requirements, and failure to do so will result in heavy penalties as prescribed in the Regulation.
